Tennis stars Tsitsipas and Wawrinka embrace Ramadan spirit in Dubai
Former Dubai champions attend a special Iftar evening with families
DUBAI – Away from the intensity of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, former champions Stefanos Tsitsipas and Stan Wawrinka experienced a meaningful cultural evening during Ramadan.
The Iftar gathering, hosted by Tournament Director Salah Tahlak, took place at Bakalís – Greek Grill Taverna at TH8 Palm Dubai Beach Resort, Vignette Collection.
Tsitsipas attended alongside his parents, while Wawrinka reflected on the personal significance of sharing traditions beyond the court.
“Being here tonight is really special,” said Wawrinka, the three-time Grand Slam winner and 2016 Dubai champion. “We’re very grateful to be invited to share this moment, especially with family. It’s about sharing cultures, and that’s one of the beautiful things about tennis. We travel the world, meet people from different backgrounds, and get the chance to experience traditions like this.”
Memorable moments
Contesting what is expected to be his final season after more than two decades on tour, Wawrinka described the evening as deeply meaningful. “It’s something very personal for me,” he added. “These experiences stay with you.”
Reigning Dubai champion Tsitsipas echoed the sentiment, noting the privilege of exploring cultures during his career. Dressed in traditional Emirati attire, the Greek star highlighted the familiarity and significance of such gestures.
“I really enjoy moments like this,” Tsitsipas said. “It’s a blessing that we get to travel the world and explore so many cultures. That’s one of the best parts of our job: Meeting people and learning from different traditions.”
He also praised Wawrinka’s longevity and achievements, reflecting on the shared journey of professional tennis. “Stan has been doing this for many, many years,” Tsitsipas said. “I hope to learn as much as I can from players like him.”

The evening underlined how the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships combine world-class sport with cultural engagement. It offered players the opportunity to connect with the city’s community and traditions, reinforcing Dubai’s reputation as a global sporting destination.
The ATP 500 men’s tournament runs from 23-28 February at Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, featuring eight of the world’s top 20 players and five former champions. Tickets are on sale, starting from Dh65.
